News 10 Now began cablecasting on November 7, 2003—it is one of eleven 24-hour local news channels owned and operated by Time Warner Cable nationwide. News 10 Now is seen exclusively by nearly 425,000 cable subscribers throughout Time Warner Cable’s Central New York Division. It's a huge coverage area, a 10,000 square mile chunk of Upstate New York including the metropolitan Syracuse area, Utica and the Mohawk Valley, the Adirondack Tri-Lakes area, plus Watertown and the St. Lawrence Seaway/Canadian border region. Utilizing the region’s largest local TV news team, our six regional newsrooms and three satellite newsgathering trucks, we offer the best coverage available throughout the Central/Northern New York region.
In February, 2007 News 10 Now launched a separate news channel serving another 155,000 Time Warner Cable customers in New York’s Southern Tier, from western Steuben County, across the Elmira/Corning area, Greater Binghamton and along the Interstate-88 corridor through Oneonta, plus portions of the Northern Tier of Pennsylvania. News 10’s staff got even bigger, adding two more regional newsrooms and a fourth satellite truck to provide extensive coverage of this new, eight-county-plus service area.
News 10 Now features a local weather forecast every ten minutes. Seven fulltime meteorologists operate from our “Weather on the 10s” forecast center, using the very latest weathergathering and severe storm-tracking technology. News 10 Now’s hourly program wheel includes local sports twice an hour, 16 hours a day, plus a wide variety of “news you can use” lifestyle features, including Cooking at Home, Pet Pointers, Garden Journeys, the Getaway Guy, and Techbeat.
Time Warner Cable first announced plans to create News 10 Now in 2000 and the project got off the ground with the purchase of the historic New York Central train station in Downtown Syracuse. Built in 1936, it was one of the most modern and ornate facilities of its time. In the early 1960s with relocation of the railway lines, the building was converted into the Syracuse Greyhound bus station. In the mid-1990s the building was abandoned and fell into disrepair. A voluntary remediation of the property began in 2001, done in cooperation with the New York Department of Environmental Conservation, and reconstruction of the building started in June 2002. The building and property has now been largely restored to its 1930s Art Deco grandeur and we're proud to have it as the headquarters for our state-of-the-art news operation.
News 10 Now is at the center of a statewide network of Time Warner Cable 24-hour newschannels, including our sister channels RNews in Rochester, Capital News 9 in Albany, YNN in Buffalo, and our flagship channel New York 1 in New York City. Our statewide reach puts our viewers at the forefront of major news events affecting all New Yorkers. Every weeknight at 8 and again at 11:30, our statewide program Capital Tonight keeps you completely on top of New York government, politics and statewide issues of importance.
Many of News 10 Now's team members are native Upstate New Yorkers who have chosen to stay in or return to this region to be part of one of the most technologically advanced newsgathering and production systems in the nation.
